Govt raises bus fares by 11 paisa per kilometre

The government has decided to raise bus fares by 11 paisa per kilometre in Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas as well as on inter-district routes, following a recent Tk 15 per litre increase in diesel price.

“Bus fares have been adjusted following the increase in fuel prices,” said Road Transport and Highways Division Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam today (23 April) at a press briefing at the Secretariat.

The minister said that the revised fares would take effect from today.

According to the revised fare structure, the per-kilometre fare for buses and minibuses in the metropolitan areas of Dhaka and Chattogram has gone up from Tk2.42 to Tk2.53.

Meanwhile, inter-district fares have been raised from Tk 2.12 to Tk 2.23 per kilometre.

Earlier, the bus fare revision committee led by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) had proposed an increase of 22 paisa per kilometre. However, the final decision led to a fare increase of 11 paisa.

The minister added that bus fares will be readjusted in the future in line with fluctuations in fuel prices.

Under the revised structure, which took effect on 19 April, diesel costs Tk115 per litre, octane Tk140, petrol Tk135 and kerosene Tk130.
